What Should You Expect From a Wedding Videographer?

So recently I saw an article about a bride suing her videographer over “the worst wedding video ever“. Judge for yourself if she is justified or needs to lighten up and get a life. She does sound like a complete bridezilla. Even so, it did get me thinking, what should you expect from a wedding vidoegrapher? I decided to ask Manchester wedding videographer, Aaron Rose, for his top five tips to consider when choosing who to film your wedding….

What Should You Expect From a Wedding Videographer?

Ask to see a longer wedding video sample

    1. The internet is flooded with fantastic looking wedding films trailers and showreels that showcase a wedding videographers work. These are a good indication of the quality of a wedding videographer’s work but not the best. The best way of ascertaining the quality of wedding video is to ask to view a longer piece of their work. Ideally you want to see the longer piece where the trailer or highlights that caught you eye came from. This piece should be longer than 15 minutes. It should be a cohesive and dynamic wedding film that tells the wedding day story in its entirety. Its also a good idea to view the full ceremony and speeches sections. In these sections you should be checking that the production values are high. Great audio in these sections is a must. The use of multiple camera angles using colour matched cameras is also essential.

Ask to see a range of wedding films

    1. Ensure your chosen wedding videographer has the experience.  Ask to see a range of wedding films. A good experienced wedding film maker will have shot many stunning films at a range of wedding venues. Getting to see a depth of work will give you a good idea of the videographer’s experience.

     Check out the Style

    1. What should you expect from a wedding videographer in terms of style? Well that is entirely a matter of personal taste and why you must communicate your preferences with your chosen videographer. Understand what style of wedding film will be delivered to you. Will it be a modern ‘Short Form’ narrative driven cinematic edit? Will it be a more classic ‘Long Form’ documentary edit? Ask how will be it delivered to you. Will it be HD online streaming? This can then be shared with friends and family and downloaded to be archived for the future. Will it be delivered on DVD or Blu-ray?

     Who will Your Videographer Be?

    1. Find out exactly who will be shooting your day. If you are booking with a named videographer will you be getting their undivided attention in shooting your day? Find out if they shoot more than one wedding a day. If so, who will be shooting your day?

     Ask About Contingency Plans

    1. Does your videographer have a second camera operator to call upon if they get ill? Do they have full insurance? Do they have spare equipment to use if things break down?

Following the above points will help you find an experienced and talented wedding videography team that will create a stunning wedding film to be enjoyed for years to come. Remember that quality and experience is often not a cheap commodity. This quote comes to mind in relation to the wedding film costs:

The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory.” — Aldo Gucci

The wedding film is a wonderful way of capturing the sights and sounds of the wedding day. The foremost regret of newly married couples is that they did not get a professional wedding film commissioned.

    Don’t let it be you!

Thankyou Aaron Rose for your top advice. In summary, what should you expect from a wedding videographer? Consistency, professionalism, quality, back up, personal service and a style that suits you.
