Wedding Flowers for an Autumn Wedding

Although a part of me is sad to finally admit that Summer has passed us by, I have to admit to loving this time of year. Clear blue skies, trees aflame with colour, crunchy leaves underfoot, an excuse to buy new clothes :). So today we have a specially commissioned post on wedding flowers for Autumn weddings, with the fabulous Adi Thomas from Verdure Floral Design, a wonderfully talented florist based in the North West, but whose reputation goes far beyond the M60. Photographs are by leading wedding photographers, McAvoy Wedding Photography.

So let’s crack on with a post filled with fabulous, Autumnal inspiration.

What defines the Autumn season for you and how do you interpret this in your designs?

The changing colours of the leaves defines Autumn for me so we use lots of rich reds and warm oranges and lime greens. We also use a lot of Oak leaves

    either dyed red or natural.

What are the most popular colours for Autumn wedding flowers?

Burnt orange, rustic reds and creams are popular, seasonal colours, however, an equal number of brides want to stick to traditional white and this year’s biggest trend so far is dusty pink.

What type of flowers would you recommend for an Autumn wedding and why?

There are so many, the mango calla lily always looks good at this time of year and is always popular with Brides and Grooms. Others which are good are Roses, Euphorbia, Freesia and Hydrangeas and Tom Pearce blooms. Just picking flowers which will create lots of texture to create a very warm, full look.

Are there any flowers you should avoid for an Autumn wedding and if so, why?

There aren’t any flowers you should avoid, as it is your wedding and you can do what you like, but there are some which aren’t available, especially Peonies. This is because they only have a short growing season over the summer.

Are there some flowers that are much more expensive but available at this time of year?

This time of year is good for most flowers as the weather is still fairly warm. White flowers tend to be quite expensive at the end of October, as All Saints Day is celebrated across Europe and it is traditional to send white flowers.

What designs would you recommend for brides who don’t want to break the bank when choosing their Autumn wedding flowers?

Keep it simple. It’s not what you spend but how you spend it.  If you can reuse any of your flowers from the ceremony at the reception, do it. You could reuse the altar flowers on your top table or use some of your table flowers on pedestals to line the aisles.

What are your top floral tips for couples planning their Autumn wedding?

There is so much to consider. Everything from the obvious-the colours of the bridesmaids’ outfits, the wedding venue decor, even the design of the cake. Autumn brings a beautiful array of warm and rich colours, so why not make the most of the season? If it all gets tied together properly the results can be stunning. But most of all just enjoy it.

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Fabulous designs, rich, warm colours. Thankyou to Verdure for their wonderful designs and advice. I need a hot chocolate with marsh mallows and a crackling fire and will be a happy bunny. Are you having an Autumn wedding? What colour scheme are you going for? Leave a comment, have an opinion and get involved. After all, it’s your blog…..
