Boudoir Photography – Is it for You?

Are you a lady who dares to bare? Who is comfortable in front of a camera playing a tantalising temptress or are you like me, who would rather be on the other side of the camera for whom the thought of stripping for everyone to see brings you out in a cold sweat?

Boudoir photography sessions for brides to be and first anniversaries are fast taking off. Photographers are seeing a huge uptake from women who want to make a special gift to their grooms for wedding gifts or husbands for first anniversaries. One female photographer in SW London who likes to do boudoir differently offers LOVE ME LOVE MY WEDDING her take on what’s in it for the women who come to boudoir shoots…So here’s Mel Wilde Photography to talk about boudoir photography. The trends, the myths and the glamour……

Boudoir photography for me took off almost in tandem with my early wedding and engagement photography business. I was asked by my early brides if it was something I had done, could do and how would I go about building their confidence. They were all GREAT questions! And I didn’t know all the answers back then, but I’m there now!

There are myths surrounding boudoir photography. The first is that boudoir isn’t about women who think they have perfect bodies, it’s about women who are at ease with those imperfections but want to do boudoir anyway. My clients don’t think they’re flawless, but they’re body confident in spite of that and come to boudoir commonly to treat and surprise their other halves around weddings…

The second biggest myth is that boudoir has to be overtly sexy and is for women who can act sexy in front of a lens. My clients come to me because I’m not trying to turn them into a cliched lingerie ad. I want them to be authentically them, I want to capture their softness and light and in the second half of the shoot their sultrier, darker side. Acting sexy isn’t what we’re trying for, we’re trying for confidence, a giggle and great posture. Posture is shape, so if you have a photographer who can help you realise which aspects of you are going to sizzle in front of the lens, you’ll instantly have someone who doesn’t snap the same images in every session, but someone who creates unique pictures of women time and time again.

For me, those images always have to be pretty and elegant, stylish and authentic. Every shoot includes a pre session consultation where we surface areas of one’s body you’re most confident about and chat about lingerie choices and preparing for shoot. Come the day, nerves ebb away quickly but an all female team helps! I work consistently with two makeup and hair artists: Tiffany Cartwright and Sarah Stevens. Both are terrific. One’s a hilarious chatterbox and one’s a gem at calming others, so I book them on the basis of who I think will suit you pre shoot as much as their fabulous talents with make up and hair! They are great at giving you two contrasting looks across your session to play to a look that’s boudoir light… and boudoir dark…

My clients, of course can come to boudoir any time, not just around weddings! I LOVE meeting clients who are mums or approaching milestone birthdays, but by far my largest client base is my brides. Most women feel a million dollars approaching a wedding… so why not, I say!

Can you imagine the thrill brides get from parcelling up a Queensberry book of images of themselves looking fabulous for their groom…  And can you imagine the groom’s reaction, lifting that book out of its tissue paper … intrigued, surprised and justly thrilled at the stunning imagery of the woman he loves most in the world…?

The whole boudoir commission is a joy for me and a real privilege. I know all my clients are nervous come shoot day, and I take that responsibility really seriously… the imagery only sings when the woman is feeling confident. In the end, it’s all about the women, not the boys!
